Breast Augmentation

Breast augmentation is one of Dr. Rafizadeh's most frequently performed procedures. Safety is always his first concern — he carefully evaluates each patient's anatomy and goals before recommending the right implant brand, type, and placement.

Natural, Proportionate Breast Augmentation

Dr. Rafizadeh has extensive experience in breast surgery in Morristown, New Jersey, offering the safest and most efficient procedures to patients who make the trip to see him. Safety has always been his number-one concern — he never used textured implants in breast augmentation because he didn't believe they made a positive difference, and he stays current with the leading implant manufacturers to offer his patients the best available options.

It is easy to get a good result in an ideal candidate for breast augmentation, but it is a lot harder to get a good result in a patient who is not an ideal candidate. Dr. Rafizadeh carefully evaluates each patient's anatomy, skin quality, existing breast tissue, and goals before recommending an implant brand, type, size, and placement.

“Breast symmetry is very critical and often difficult to achieve if one doesn’t master the breast surgical techniques of reduction, lift, and augmentation. Safety was always my #1 concern — I evaluate each patient individually to select the right implant for their anatomy and goals.”

— Dr. Farhad Rafizadeh, MD FACS

Implant Brands: Allergan, Mentor & Motiva

Dr. Rafizadeh offers the three leading implant brands used by board-certified plastic surgeons today:

Allergan (Natrelle) — One of the most widely used and extensively studied implant lines in the world. Allergan offers both round and shaped (anatomical) silicone gel implants in a wide range of profiles and volumes, with a strong long-term safety record and comprehensive warranty program.

Mentor — Another FDA-approved industry leader offering saline and silicone gel implants including the MemoryGel® line, known for a cohesive gel that holds its shape and provides a natural look and feel. Mentor implants have decades of clinical data supporting their safety and durability.

Motiva — A newer generation ergonomic implant featuring SilkSurface® technology, a progressive gel that responds naturally to body position, and a nano-textured surface designed to minimize capsular contracture risk. Motiva implants are becoming increasingly popular for patients seeking a soft, natural result with the latest implant technology.

Implant Options & Placement

Dr. Rafizadeh offers both saline and silicone gel implants across the Allergan, Mentor, and Motiva lines. Implants can be placed either over the muscle (sub-glandular, above the pectoral muscle) or under the muscle (sub-muscular, beneath the pectoral muscle). Sub-muscular placement is the more common approach — it produces the most natural appearance in patients with thinner breast tissue, lowers the risk of capsular contracture, and allows more accurate mammography. Sub-glandular placement sits above the muscle and is sometimes preferred for patients with more existing breast tissue, those who perform heavy upper-body exercise, or where a shorter recovery is a priority. Dr. Rafizadeh evaluates each patient's anatomy to recommend the right placement. Incision options include the inframammary fold (most direct access, well-hidden under the breast), the periareolar (at the areolar edge), and the axillary (armpit) approach — all discussed during your personal consultation.

Augmentation with Lift

When significant breast ptosis (sagging) is present, augmentation alone may not produce the desired result. Dr. Rafizadeh has approximately 28 years of experience doing all kinds of breast surgery including augmentation mastopexy — one of the most demanding operations in breast surgery. He assesses whether augmentation, lift, or a combined procedure in one stage is the most appropriate approach for each patient's anatomy.

Recovery Timeline

Days 1–3: Tightness, soreness, and swelling. A surgical bra is worn. Activity is limited.
Days 4–7: Most patients feel comfortable and move around normally. Driving resumes when comfortable.
Weeks 1–2: Return to desk work and light daily activity. Heavy lifting avoided.
Weeks 4–6: Return to full exercise. Implants settle into final position over 3–6 months.

Breast Augmentation FAQs

What implant types does Dr. Rafizadeh offer?+

Dr. Rafizadeh offers implants from the three leading manufacturers — Allergan (Natrelle), Mentor, and Motiva — in both saline and silicone gel formulations. Allergan and Mentor are the two most extensively studied implant lines with decades of FDA-approval and clinical data. Motiva is a newer ergonomic implant featuring progressive gel and nano-textured surface technology, increasingly popular for its soft, natural result. He has never offered textured macro-surface implants, which he did not believe provided a meaningful advantage and which have since been associated with higher complication rates.

Where is the incision placed and will I have visible scars?+

There is always a scar after breast implant surgery, but the scars can be minimal or well hidden. The most common incision location is the inframammary fold (under the breast), which provides the most direct access and is hidden by the breast itself. A periareolar incision (at the edge of the areola) provides a camouflage effect. There is also the axillary incision (in the armpit), preferred by some patients because it leaves no scar on the breast. Saline implants can be inserted through a smaller incision because the implant is placed empty — silicone gel implants require a larger incision because they are pre-filled. — Dr. Rafizadeh, betterplasticsurgery.com

What is the difference between sub-muscular and sub-glandular placement?+

Sub-muscular placement (under the pectoral muscle) is the most common approach. It produces a more natural result in slender patients with thin breast tissue, lowers the risk of capsular contracture, and allows more accurate mammography. Sub-glandular placement (above the muscle, under the breast tissue) can be appropriate in certain patients — particularly those with significant natural breast tissue or those who engage in heavy upper-body exercise and find sub-muscular implants uncomfortable. Dr. Rafizadeh recommends the appropriate placement based on your individual anatomy.

How do I choose the right implant size?+

Implant size is measured in cubic centimeters (cc) — not cup sizes. The right size for you depends on your body frame, chest width, existing breast tissue, skin laxity, and aesthetic goals. Dr. Rafizadeh takes precise measurements during your consultation and uses sizers and imaging to help you visualize the expected result. His goal is always a result that is proportionate to your frame and looks completely natural — not implant-dependent.

Can I have a breast augmentation and lift at the same time?+

Yes — though this is one of the more demanding operations in breast surgery. Dr. Rafizadeh has nearly 30 years of experience performing augmentation mastopexy (augmentation combined with lift) in a single operation when appropriate. He evaluates each patient's degree of ptosis (sagging), skin quality, and desired size to determine whether a one-stage or two-stage approach offers the best and safest result. — Dr. Rafizadeh, betterplasticsurgery.com

Will breast implants affect my ability to breastfeed?+

In most cases, breast augmentation does not affect the ability to breastfeed, particularly when implants are placed sub-muscularly. The milk ducts and nipple are not typically disturbed during sub-muscular augmentation. If you plan to have children after augmentation, discuss this with Dr. Rafizadeh during your consultation, as the incision location and placement approach may be tailored accordingly. Pregnancy and breastfeeding can themselves cause changes in breast shape that may affect your long-term result.

What is the recovery after breast augmentation?+

Days 1–3: Tightness, soreness, and swelling. A surgical bra is worn continuously. Activity is limited to walking. Days 4–7: Most patients feel comfortable and can move around normally. Driving resumes when comfortable. Weeks 1–2: Return to desk work and light daily activities. Heavy lifting and chest exercise avoided. Weeks 4–6: Return to full exercise. Implants settle into final position over 3–6 months.
