Sculptra Collagen Biostimulator
Aging of the face isn't only about wrinkles — it's about volume loss. As the years pass, the skin's own collagen breaks down faster than the body replaces it, and the face slowly loses the firm, supported look of youth. Sculptra takes a fundamentally different approach from traditional fillers: instead of injecting a gel to sit under the skin, it uses poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA) to prompt your body to rebuild its own collagen over the following weeks. The result is gradual, natural, and long-lasting — volume and firmness that look like they were always yours. This regenerative, “your-own-collagen” philosophy is exactly why collagen biostimulators are among the fastest-rising treatments in aesthetics heading into 2026, with the American Society of Plastic Surgeons naming skin biostimulators a leading trend. Dr. Farhad Rafizadeh has guided patients through facial rejuvenation for more than 40 years in Morristown, NJ.
“Sculptra appeals to the patient who doesn't want to look ‘done.’ We're not filling a line — we're rebuilding the collagen the face has lost, gradually, so the change is quiet and natural. Friends notice you look refreshed; they never guess why. That subtlety, and how long it lasts, is what makes it such a good fit for the way patients want to age today.”

How Sculptra Works
Sculptra is made of poly-L-lactic acid, a biocompatible, biodegradable material that has been used safely in medicine — in dissolvable sutures and implants — for decades, and FDA-approved for aesthetic use since 2009. When it is injected into the deeper layers of the skin, the PLLA microparticles act as a scaffold. Your body responds the way it responds to any biostimulator: by laying down fresh collagen along that scaffold. Over the following weeks the PLLA itself is gradually absorbed and broken down into water and carbon dioxide, while the new collagen remains — restoring volume, firmness, and a smoother surface from within. Because the improvement is your own tissue rather than a gel deposit, it integrates seamlessly and ages naturally with you.
What Sculptra Treats
Sculptra is best suited to restoring broad, global volume rather than precise spot-shaping. The most common areas treated include:
Rebuilds the foundational volume of the cheeks and midface that flattens with age, lifting and supporting the overlying skin for a softer, fuller contour.
Restores the sunken temples and hollowing that often accompany aging or weight loss — a frequent concern after rapid GLP-1 weight loss.
Softens the smile lines (nasolabial folds) and marionette lines and helps re-establish jawline definition by rebuilding support across the lower face.
Sculptra vs. Traditional Fillers
Both are injectables, but they work in opposite ways. A hyaluronic-acid dermal filler such as Juvederm or Restylane adds instant volume by occupying space beneath the skin; you see the result the same day, it typically lasts several months to about a year, and it can be dissolved if needed. Sculptra works gradually — it stimulates your own collagen, so the change emerges over two to three months and tends to last two years or more. Neither is “better”; they solve different problems. Fillers excel at precise, immediate shaping such as the lips or a single fold; Sculptra excels at restoring overall, global volume and skin quality across the whole face. Many patients use them together — and combine Sculptra with BOTOX® or Dysport for lines of expression — for a complete, natural refresh. For patients who have lost significant facial volume, Dr. Rafizadeh may also discuss facial fat grafting as a surgical alternative. And for areas that call for immediate structure as well as collagen — the jawline, chin, or hands — Radiesse, a calcium-based biostimulator, bridges both worlds.

Sculptra is given as a short series — most patients need two to four sessions spaced about four to six weeks apart, depending on how much volume has been lost. Each visit is a quick in-office injection, usually with topical numbing for comfort, after which the treated areas are massaged to distribute the product evenly. There is essentially no downtime: most people return to normal activity the same day, though mild swelling, redness, or small bruises at the injection points are common for a few days. You'll be asked to massage the areas at home for several days to help the result settle smoothly. Because collagen rebuilds slowly, the improvement appears gradually over two to three months rather than all at once — and then holds for two years or longer.
Are You a Candidate?
Good candidates are bothered by volume loss and thinning skin — flat cheeks, hollow temples, deepening folds — and want a natural, gradual result rather than an instant change. It is an excellent option for patients who feel they have lost facial fullness with age or after weight loss, including the facial hollowing many notice after rapid GLP-1 (Ozempic, Wegovy) weight loss, and for those who prefer a regenerative approach over repeated short-lived fillers. Patients seeking immediate, precise correction of a single area, or those who are pregnant or have certain active skin infections or autoimmune conditions, may be better served by another option. At consultation, Dr. Rafizadeh reviews your goals and medical history and recommends the approach — Sculptra, fillers, fat grafting, or a combination — best matched to your face.
