Pain after abdominoplasty is a problem immediately after the surgery and will subside in a few days. During this time the patients require pain medicine to make them more comfortable. It is also important that the patients get out of bed and move around to reduce the likelihood of clothing in the leg veins. What ever can be done to reduce the pain after the surgery will improve the patient’s recovery and comfort. Many methodes are used to reduce the pain including pain pump catheters insertion. I usually infiltrate the fascia on each side of the muscle repair as well as the lower abdominal incision with a dilute solution of a long acting local anesthetic agent. This is very helpful, but recently blocking the nerves over one of the deep muscles in the hip area seems to work as well. This procedure will reduce the patient’s pain in the first day post op and is specially helpful for patient who desire to have abdominoplasty as an out patient and go home after surgery. This block is performed at the time of the surgery.
