Quick recovery breast augmentation is a technique that I learned from Dr Tebbet years ago and have been practicing it for many years in New Jersey. It involves the use of electrocautery for dissection of the breast pocket with no blunt dissection. The bleeding is less because all blood vessels are cauterized. Recently with better lighted detractors and slightly wider incision for inserting a silicone implants, it is easier to minimize trauma to the rib cage and make the recovery less painful and quicker. The pain after breast augmentation is usually related to the trauma to the periosteum, the layer that covers the ribs and has many pain fibers in it. By avoiding unnecessary trauma to the ribs the postoperative pain is reduced and the patient is allowed to move her arms. I typically tell the patient to come in with a bra that they would like to fit into after surgery. We determine the final size by trying implants in that bra. Then they bring the bra with them the day of surgery and wear it after the operation. We do not use compression and wrapping with an ace bandage. The patient is allowed to return to work quickly after surgery and resume normal activity with few restrictions. The bruising is minimal because there is less bleeding.
