Our face is the constantly visible part of our body; it represents our identity. It expresses our emotions, stress levels, happiness, and kindness to the world. It is important to take care of our appearance, expressions, and beautiful features through procedures such as a facelift in New Jersey.
As a plastic surgeon, I find facelifts to be one of my favorite operations because they can be customized to the individual needs of each patient. The goal is to use the least amount of incisions while maximizing aesthetic benefits. Facial harmony is key to achieving successful results. Utilizing the concept of the golden proportion, we aim to create a natural and proportionate appearance that enhances the beauty of the face.
To understand what needs to be done, it is important to understand the changes that occur as the face ages. If you compare baby photos to adult photos, you’ll notice that as a baby, the face is chubby and the bones are smaller. As a young adult, the face is fuller, the skin is tighter, and the bones are stronger. With age, the skin loses elasticity, there is less fat under the skin, and the bones are smaller and weaker. This causes the skin and soft tissues of the cheek to migrate lower, resulting in a more rectangular face shape.
To achieve a youthful appearance, we aim to reverse all of these changes. A facelift alone addresses laxity caused by the loss of elasticity. To counter the effect of fat and bone loss, we may use techniques such as fat grafting, facial implants, or injectable fillers. We can also improve the skin’s surface through resurfacing and skin care. True rejuvenation requires addressing all of these issues.
Facelift Surgery New Jersey
My facelift procedure in New Jersey is highly individualized to meet the specific needs of each patient. Some patients require a full face and neck lift, while others only need their cheeks lifted. Others may only need volume restoration to achieve their desired results. The extent of the procedure depends on the degree of aging and the patient’s desired outcome. I take the time to analyze the entire face and have a thorough discussion with the patient to reach a mutual decision. I have also made modifications to the facelift procedure to make it safer, less invasive, and minimize potential complications.
My practice in New Jersey is built on word-of-mouth referrals, and I cannot tolerate any problems. I understand that a patient with a good result may choose not to share their surgery with others, but a patient with a bad result or complication will likely share their experience with many. It is important to note that I have a deep love and care for my patients, who trust me with their appearance and I treat them as if they were my own family. See my blog post on What is it that distinguished Dr. Farhad Rafizadeh’s Morristown facelift.
The facelift procedure in New Jersey is often combined with eyelid surgery or a brow lift. The position and appearance of the lower eyelids are closely related to the position of the cheeks (mid-face). As the face descends, the lid-cheek junction is lowered, creating a groove between the cheeks and the eyelids. Lifting the cheeks to a higher position improves this situation and reduces downward traction on the lids. The position of the brow also has a similar relationship with the upper lid.
Because the neck and face are interconnected, changes in the face will affect the neck and vice versa. In general, I try to preserve all of the fat in the face, except in cases where the face is round and ill-defined. In those situations, I may remove some fat from the deep planes (buccal fat pad). In some cases, the buccal fat pad herniates in the area of the jowls. This deep fat must be removed from the inside of the mouth or exceptionally from under the cheek skin. This can only be done by direct exposure. I have seen patients who, due to a lack of understanding of this condition, have had their deformity worsen when the fat was removed by liposuction.
In contrast, the neck often has excess fat that needs removal, usually from under the chin. This fat is removed through liposuction or by direct excision through a small incision under the chin. I make sure to leave a good layer of fat under the skin to create a smooth angle and contour in the neck. At the same time, the muscle bands that create the turkey neck can be interrupted and sewn together to create a sling under the chin. Then, by lifting the muscles (platysma muscle) from the cheeks, the sling is further tightened, giving the neck a smooth and youthful appearance. I’m not particularly eager to pass any sutures in the neck, as I believe it will create an exaggerated sharp angle between the chin and the neck, which is not harmonious or aesthetic.
I have developed a method of administering local anesthesia, which makes it possible to use mild sedation to relax the patient and have their cooperation during the surgery, especially during eyelid surgery. The patient’s cooperation is essential for the success and recovery of the procedure. For example, when removing the skin from the lower eyelid, I ask the patient to open their mouth and look up to ensure that an adequate amount of skin is removed without pulling on the lower lid margin. The patient is also asked to extend their neck when working under the chin.
This type of facelift in New Jersey, performed under local anesthesia and moderate sedation, is well-tolerated by patients. During the surgery, we often engage in interesting conversations with the patients or listen to music. I remember one patient who was an opera singer who sang for us during her facelift procedure. Please don’t be afraid of local anesthesia; I have mastered it for your benefit, but if you are still concerned, it is always possible to discuss other methods of anesthesia with me. You can also talk to one of my patients and ask about their experience with facelift in New Jersey.
After the procedure, the patient goes directly to the second stage of recovery with a head dressing. They will sit with their family and have something to eat or drink before the discharge. They will be seen in the office the next day, in three days, in a week, in a month, and six months to a year for follow-up appointments.
